Basil is featured in the March 2002 issue of Land Rover World! He also appears in the June 2002 issue of 4WD & Sport Utility Magazine.
I like cars with character and a real purpose.
Baby the Miata is the everyday sports car -
limited in practicality, it's better than just about anything else at generating
grins with a musical exhaust note and telepathic handling.
The Seven is my latest project. It should be better than the Miata at generating
grins and even more limited in practicality. This has been a long time coming.
The Cadillac is a 1966 Cadillac Sedan De Ville
that's just, well, excessive. And that's the fun part.
The Brave Scooby is simple transportation
and loyal.
And Basil. A 1967 Land Rover 88" Station Wagon.
Why? Because it's like nothing else I own, they're fun to work on, fully capable off-road and, well, c'mon. Just look at it. Character! Plus I'm not going to lose my license speeding in it with a top speed around 100 kmh. I'm a sucker for vehicles that are specialized and designed for a very particular use.
Basil is red with the original paint (well, where it has paint) a tropical roof, four jump seats in the rear, deluxe bonnet, Kodiak heater, hand throttle (aka "cruise control") and a full dose of character. I can also pull the top off, remove the doors and fold down the windscreen for a full-on convertible experience.
Future plans?
- install that winch
- more adventures.
I've got to say that it is much nicer working on Basil now that I have access to a shop instead of lying on the ice with a -25C windchill!
